The engineers' research at STL, which opened in Harlow in 1956, led to a trial fibre-optic system starting between Hitchin and Stevenage in 1977 through which engineers could make phone calls.
The rush to use fibre optics led to them being positioned under the sea and roads across the UK where dug up to accommodate them, it was the internet boom in the 1990s that really took advantage of fibre optics. Full story
